"Four weeks of evolving artworks created collaboratively between CO Exhibitions' parent companies Permanent Art & Design Group and Burlesque of North America along with a roster of hand-selected Twin Cities artists.

For the entire run of WORKING TITLE, dozens of pieces of art will be passed around, communally embellished, tinkered with, and re-worked in CO's Northeast Minneapolis gallery space, as well as in the artists’ own studios. Each week for four weeks, a new opening reception will occur, and each week the artwork will change--fluctuating not only in style, concept, and number of contributors, but also in price, scale, and media. Pieces sold at any given opening will not be worked on further, remaining on display as they were at the time of purchase. "

Saturday, January 21st / 7-10pm
The grand opening of WORKING TITLE will feature dozens of pieces that have been traded between and worked on by the participating artists through the month of January leading up to the event.

Here are some of the pieces I worked on for the first round of this collaborative experiment:

I worked on this big crazy giant drawing by Kyle Helle.

Josh Journey Heinz provided this horrific mask. I sewed on ears and gave her a pink rash.

I did some collage and painting on these photos by Wes Winship.

Wes Winship painted the Popeye arm and I painted the skeleton on this thrift store gem.

Girl painting by Rudy Fig with photo transparency overlay (of Minneapolis) by Ben LaFond. I painted the white details and the eyeballs.

I painted and collaged on this test print by LandLand.

OPENING RECEPTION #2
Friday, January 27th / 6-9pm
Unsold pieces from the first opening will be re-exhibited after another round of re-imagining by the artists, who will add, subtract, bedazzle, and embellish the pieces into something new.

I painted a big carousel cat onto this textured red ground by Michael Cina and Joseph Belk.

Kyle Helle painted this eel guy on my whale print and then I painted the black and some bubbles.

I painted a robot face onto this eerie airport photo by Eric Melzer.

I was kind of in love with the way Ben LaFond painted this photo so I couldn't bear to touch it. I added a shooting target and frame with a couple panes of painted glass inside.

Friday, February 3rd / 6-9pm

I've been very ill with the plague this week so I didn't accomplish as much this week... =0(
but I had fun working on these two pcs:

Someone (I've lost track!) added a bird shape to this print by LandLand. I added the pink/bicycle/stripes. It is a bad photo but it looks nice and shinygold in real life.

I can't even tell you who all worked on this one...I know there is some Kate Iverson goin on. I added the horses, the purpleypink (of course), and the stripes.

I've completely lost track of who did what so I'll show how they looked before and after I worked on them.

Lots and lots of dots. (By Aaron Bickner, Wes Winship, me and ???)

Lots and lots of teeny tiny stripes.

I painted the background of this one black and red but the paint rubbed off when I touched it. So I rubbed it all of and added new stripes. And beady eyes.

I went to the final reception last night and was pleasantly surprised with the results of our crazy project. So many insane, ridiculous, lovely and bizarre things!
I took a few snapshots of some of the art I had worked on so I could share the changes they underwent in subsequent weeks. I apologize for not writing down the names of all of the people that worked on them...

Carly Schoen added flowers to finish this one. LOVE IT!

LOLZ!!!! Josh Journey Hinz added pigs and COUSCOUS to the bottom of the shadow box.

Rudy fig added a pretty ghost.

Thrift store Jesus underwent a magical transformation! ;0)

LandLand added the dog whorshippers. ;0)

Ben LaFond and ???

WHEEEEEEEW! That was challenging and fun. I'm so glad I participated. It is good for me to step outside of what I normally do and excercise my brain in new ways. Thank you CO Exhibitions and and all of the artists that made this happen.

"The exhibition features donated work from 34 artists whose talent and generosity will aid the Japan Society Earthquake Reliief Fund. In keeping with the "Support. Inspire. Create. Renew" vision of ART from the ashes; all the work will integrate the use of reclaimed elements and embody the theme of support. Artists were encouraged to "reclaim" their own remnants (castoffs from their own creative process) for use in creating their piece. By utilizing materials that appear to be void of possibility, the artwork in this exhibition intends to symbolize a renewal process for Japan that inspires hope."

"This painting was created from several remnants from my creative process. Often when I am starting a new painting I change my mind about the size or scale of the painted panel and trim off one or more of the edges. I have been saving these colorful scraps for many years thinking that I would eventually use them to create some smaller works. This benefit project was the perfect opportunity for me to use eight of my favorite scraps to build a new canvas. I have also included a few of my favorite characters and patterns from some of my earlier works."

This unique one weekend only pop-up gallery in downtown St. Paul will feature works in a variety of mediums by both artists on board, wood and paper, framed and unframed, large works and small.

Over the past several years we (Jennifer Davis and Amy Rice) have continued to make and exhibit art together partly inspired by the creative, contagious energy of our friendship and mutual admiration for each other’s work. It all started in 2006 when we hosted our two person exhibition, "Delightful" at Rosalux Gallery in Minneapolis. In 2008 we exhibited a second collection of collaborative works in "Delightful Too" at Youngblood Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. Our third installment of "Delightful" is now coming to St. Paul as a pop-up gallery for four days only.

I will be presenting a class about how to make a
Shadow Puppet Animation
at the Science Museum of Minnesota on May 4th, 2011
as part of their Making After Hours series.

"Making After Hours is a series of art, technology, and engineering workshops for adults (18+) that takes place once a month from February through August. The workshops include an introduction led by a guest artist, materials and technology you can use in your project, and a great atmosphere for "making" after work.

Jennifer Davis is a drawing and painting artist that has shown her work extensively in the Twin Cities, and most recently at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts/MAEP Gallery. Although not a shadow puppet artist, Jennifer's characters translate well into silhouettes, combined with stop motion animation, her narrative paintings come to life. Jennifer will give a brief presentation of her work then lead in the instruction of making character silhouettes. A Science Museum of Minnesota instructor will demonstrate the SAM animation software. All supplies for this workshop are included in admission price. Take home the puppets you make and a link to your downloadable movie."

Before I became involved in this project I had never made a "shadow puppet" much less an animation. The technology is really simple and intuitive and I had an absolute blast making my little cat movie. I think this class is going to be a lot of fun. Join me, won't you?

1. Richard Scary's Best Story Book Ever and my childhood toys. (I recently rediscovered the book and boxes full of my old toys/drawings. Everything I do makes more sense to me now)..."

I had no conscious recollection of these books until I rediscovered my childhood toys.

Could this be the root of my inexplicable obsession with (upsidedown?!?!) wind instruments over the years?!?!

I was pretty surprised to see how many parallels i found between these books and my paintings.

Jennifer Davis creates lyrical figurative works of serious tenderness and beauty. She lures us into her painted world through flowing line, pastel palette and a quixotic sensibility. Her signature style belies her worry and the enduring mystery that permeates her realm. Throughout her compositions, Davis presents an array of fantastic characters and transmuted creatures who seem happy to co-exist in a flat landscape devoid of contextual cues. It is a visionary place. And it resonates with the pictorial truth of Jennifer Davis’ bewilderment and love.

In describing her process, Davis explains that her images rise up out of each surface while she works. She begins her compositions under painting simple territories of flat color. Nearly always, the eyes (of animal or plant) appear first, like portals into some sentient being to which Davis intuits a surrounding form. It can be said that her paintings are self portraits, but not in any staid sense of the word. She appears in each composition—like an avatar of many guises—her primary incarnation a wide-eyed girl who is mild yet ever-vigilant. She is patient with aliens, a friend to plants and animals; always serving as a protector for the meek and those who can not run. She is, indeed, the mistress of her domain.

In her large-scale work titled “Keeper”, our sleepless protagonist (who looks to have been up for days, perhaps even years) carries a large potted plant that reaches high over her head with branched foliage. She easily supports its weight; her connection to the plant made clear by the identical pattern of leaves emblazoned on her dress. For Davis, the plant is a powerful symbol for creativity; each leaf holding a separate concern. “This plant is her responsibility,” says Davis. “It speaks to the daily challenge of being an artist and of living a genuine life in the 21st century.”

A mysterious deer-like creature proceeds across a virtual landscape in “Preserve”, with trees and ferns riding on its back. She is the allusive every-creature, immune to our classification and control. She, too, is emblazoned with leaves on her body, like the pre-historic horses and reindeers honored by their people with indigo tattoos. She carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. Indeed, without her, we are through.

In Davis’s mixed media work titled “New Puppy” the chaos of an endless information loop floats above a dog-headed girl, who sits in the void of a horizon-less space. Holding her head in hands, she ponders her situation. A nearby puppy, fully intact as a canine, is not daunted. This, coupled with the fact that she had the wherewithal to put together a stylin’ outfit, assures us that there is still hope.

A childlike wonderment reads throughout Davis’ work; something that continually exclaims “Look at this!” and “What is really happening?” Davis never pretends to be didactic, but if we choose to apply her riddles to our own make-believe, we might find the answer, which is this: tend to and care for what is in your midst. This simple sentiment holds the power to re-set the trajectory of our human future. It is said that the meek shall inherit the Earth. If this is so, one can only hope that the likes of Jennifer Davis and her cast of sentient beings will ultimately receive what is duly their own.

* Post-Savasana party inside SooVac gallery for the unveiling of Art MATters, an exhibit featuring local artist designed yoga mats by Isaac Arvold, Peter Bekke from Burlesque of North America, Erin Currie, Tara Costello, Jennifer Davis, Bethany Kalk, Mousesaw, Terrence Payne, Amy Rice and Sean Tubridy.
* Attendees will vote on their favorite designs, and the winner will be put into production by SooVAC + Gorillas. In addition, there will be a drawing for each mat, with proceeds partially benefiting SooVAC, a non-profit gallery that is devoted to emerging artists.
